Research & development Collaboration with California State U

Scientist in lab coat and safety glasses reaching towards lab equipment.

BGR is working with California State University, Chico Research Foundation to continuously improve and optimize its proprietary green bioremediation technology.

BGR's agreement with the California State University, Chico Research Foundation includes consultation with Dr. Randall von Wedel, an adjunct professor and leading expert in bioremediation.

This relationship allows BGR use of the laboratory facilities for bench-scale testing and consultation with Dr. von Wedel and provides the university and its biochemistry students practical experience in the environmental remediation industry.

RANDALL VON WEDEL, PH.D., PRINCIPAL BIOCHEMIST / RESEARCHER

Dr. von Wedel conducts laboratory and pilot-scale research to support field-scale bioremediation technologies for the clean-up of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and groundwater. CytoCulture developed and commercialized soil and groundwater bioremediation technologies starting in 1989 with a continuous flow augmented bioreactor system for separating free-phase product then biotreating dissolved phase hydrocarbons down to drinking water standards for re-injection of the cleaned water, facultative bacteria and nutrients into the contaminated aquifer. CytoCulture introduced vacuum heap soil treatment technology with Sybron Corporation (1991) that successfully treated 6,000 cy of crude oil contaminated material at a pipeline spill in less than six months. Numerous soil land farming projects were performed at former production well or terminal properties in the 1990s.

His laboratory at CSU Chico Center for Water and the Environment offers soil microcosm studies for testing methods and additives such as surfactants or soil amendments to enhance the rate and extent of bioremediation. Dr. von Wedel is available on a consulting basis through BGR to design and manage full-scale bioremediation sites in the western U.S.

Dr. von Wedel is a graduate of Dartmouth College and received his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco.
